Chanter Facts
At the height of power, chanters were once held as champions of Dias as well as harbingers of judgment and enforcers justice. They were once employed by The Seat of Asteria and were said to be able to stop entire armies with their voices and singing fire down from the heavens on top of their heads and beguiling the minds of the fellow soldiers to kill one another. They were known to wonder the countryside hunting wrong doers and sentencing them to harsh judgments of death. Those are the stories and there are a lot of them. Too many of them in cat to the point it’s just sickening. Painting, poems, and song have immortalized this point in Fen elf history that it is all many would believe. The truth is the path of a true chanter is not controlled by the greed of power. However, history seems to suffer from amnesia of the truth.
Most historians and scholars seem to focus more on the suffering of those by the hands of chanters who strayed from the path and their duty to Dias’s people. In truth, we chanters aren’t harbingers of judgment and we don’t dish out justice where we see fit. Dias didn’t make chanters for that purpose, what became of chanters during that time in history was the whim of a Queen and those dods of chanters who followed her. They are all responsible for what occurred.
What are chanters then?
Chanters are those gifted with the ability of enhanced voices. It’s a divine ability and one that isn’t supposed to be used for oppression or death.
Chanters are given power over Dias’s Hymn, a ten verse hymn of power spoken in the language of Melodic.
Each verse is referred to as a phrase in this case, and each chanter can control one or more of the 10 phrases.
Each chanter is born with a set of phrases that they will learn and master over their life time and never all of them. Generally, a chanter will learn all their phrases when they are young and each phrase they learn is personalized and perform uniquely. For example:
I know, light, peace, purification, protection, and risen.
My mentor, Mien, knows light, peace, healing, silence, and protection. Not to mention a corruption purification song.
As an example of how unique phrases perform to the chanter, my phrase of light is a starlight and it has low luminosity and low heat. Though, it can get warm enough to burn when responding to my emotions. My light aligns with the stars.
Mien’s phrase of light is a sun globe and had high luminosity and high heat. He can also control the heat of the globe from warm to burn everything. His light aligns with the sun.
They also claim a chanter’s phrase of light is a good way to determine a chanter’s personality.
Those who align with the sun tend to be passionate, emotional, strong, boisterous, and intense.
Those who align with the stars tend to be emotional, spirited, temperamental, and reserved.
Those who align with the moon, wise, calm, joyful, and loving.
Personally, I don’t agree with that classification at all. Too general.
Chanters, however, do have proper classification based on their edict phrased.
An edict phrase is a chanter’s most powerful phrase. It is learned during a chanter’s edict and is usually learned at an important crux of a chanter life.
Edicts occur when a chanter is young, but there are instances where a chanter will go through their edict when they are older because that is the point they are ready for it.

Other than having magical abilities, what makes a chanter different from normal elves?
And I think that’s it as far as this information goes. I really, really hope that I don’t have to add more to this. But I know I will. My lovely wife is going to read this and pester me about what I written and not given enough detail to thing or even get on me for inserting myself in a few pages of facts. I find it difficult not to.

Other than having magical abilities, what makes a chanter different from normal elves?
- They have to be of the Fenndish faith. There hasn’t been a single recorded chanter who has been of any other religion. Druids can’t be chanters and witches can’t be chanters. If the chanter falls out of faith or become corrupted, they become graceless and still have their phrases, except they become twisted. Their voice becomes rancorous and then will become a shell of their former selves and become what is known as banshees. Note: That label does apply to males as well. Females were gifted the ability to become chanters first. They are better at the role. However something, something happened and puff, a male chanter was born.
- They usually have very bright eyes. I mean even more so for the normal elf. They do tend to shift in shade when using their abilities.
- They talk with what is known as a “chanter’s lit.” I’ve asked my non-chanter friends and family members to describe what this “lit” sounds like so I can get an accurate description of it. All I got was a bunch of shoulder heaves, head tilts, and “there are no appropriate words to describe it.” Thankfully my brother supplied me with something, though, I still think is poor but he claimed it was an “empowered ring” to the chanters voice.
- They love music and singing one might say entranced by it at times. More so if a chanter has timbre sensitivity.
- Chanters have good hearing and can hear magical timbres. Magical timbre is the magical sound that all things make. Chanters can hear it, normal people cannot unless they are chanter gifted. There are those chanters with timbre sensitivity. They can feel a lot more. Basically, have timbre sensitivity plays with the other senses on some level. A timbre sensitive chanter might hear a sound and get a taste from it or feel sensations. They might hear a singer’s voice and feel the song they are singing and break down in tears because the song sounds sad.
- Chanter gifted individuals have some chanter ability. Either a parent or a grandparent was a chanter. Usually, grandparent as chanters tend to skip a generation. One of their children has a high chance of being a chanter. They cannot use phrases, but they do have sensitive hearing and can sense timbres, use force of voice, and can be really reactive to a chanter.
